 Buzz or Bust?
Will Your Next Speaker Create a Buzz or be a Bust?
by Debra J. Schmidt, Loyalty Leader®

Seasoned meeting planners know that when all is said and done, attendees will be talking about the speaker long after the event is over. Your next speaker can create an excited buzz or be a bust. Either way, your personal credibility is at stake.

Start searching for the right speaker as soon as you’ve set the date and location of your event because great speakers book up quickly. You can find and book the speakers who’ll make you shine, by using these time-tested tips:

Create an audience profile.

Determine the type of speaker who will best appeal to your audience. Will your audience benefit most from an expert in the field, entertainer, celebrity or a professional speaker who has a thorough knowledge of the topic? Consider the age, gender, educational level, profession and even the prevailing attitude of your audience. Find a speaker whose style complements your audience

Define the objective of the program.

A good speaker should be able to deliver information, entertainment and motivation, while supporting your primary objective. The more clearly you focus on the desired results, the easier it will be to find the right speaker for your event. A question I ask every meeting planner is this: “What is the ONE thing you want your audience to walk away from as a result of my program?” Their responses vary greatly depending upon the needs of the organization.

Find the right speaker at the right price.

A high-priced speaker, celebrity image or well-know name does not guarantee a great presentation. High prices do not always reflect high quality. Speaker fees for a keynote program can range from $500 - $25K, or higher. The great majority of professional speaker fees will fall somewhere in the $2500 - $10K range. When you hire a speaker, you are not only paying for their time on the platform, but also for their expertise, research, preparation and customization of the presentation.

Determine what percentage of your budget has been allotted to cover speaker fees. This will help you target your search. Don’t skimp, but look for ways to save money. Many speakers are willing to offer package deals. If you hire them to present a keynote, they may be willing to stick around to give an afternoon workshop for a reduced fee since they are already on site.

Work with a professional.

Call the speaker directly to discuss the goals of your event. You’ll quickly get a sense of their style and level of professionalism. If possible, ask for permission to attend an upcoming program so you can personally observe that speaker in action. You’ll see their speaking and platform skills firsthand and be able to measure how the audience reacts to their presentation.

A professional speaker will understand that their performance impacts your reputation. The right speaker will partner with you to make your next event a booming success.

Your Teleseminars on customer service came along in a timely fashion. I’ve wanted to start a “refresher” course on customer service for my team for some time now. Your presentations have served as a catalyst in getting it started. I’ve been able to surround the two teleconferences we’ve experienced with follow-up exercises and meetings to reinforce what has been learned. The response from my creative and administrative support teams has been enthusiastic to say the least. My sincere thanks!
